      Abstract

First-year college students are prone to academic stress, which can trigger emotional eating and affect their food intake. Music is one non-pharmacological coping strategy for reducing stress. This study aims to analyze the relationship between music listening habits, academic stress, and emotional eating with the dietary intake of first-year students at IPB University. The study was conducted as a cross-sectional study involving 85 students selected via random sampling. Data were collected using the Music Preference Questionnaire, the Perception of Academic Stress Scale, the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire-Emotional, and a 2×24-hour food recall. The results showed that gender was significantly associated with academic stress (p=0.007), and that pocket money was significantly and negatively associated with energy intake (p=0.049), while the duration of music listening, academic stress, and emotional eating were not significantly associated with one another or with nutrient intake. These findings indicate that academic stress among first-year students is more influenced by gender than by music listening habits, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive approach to understanding the relationship between music, stress, and students' dietary patterns.
