Abstract
The most basic need for a human being for its survival is food. In developing country like Indonesia, poverty and food insecurity are still become central issues. Poverty and food security have a relationship with nutritional problem indirectly. Under-five children is one of vulnerable group of nutritional problem. Banjarnegara include food insecurity area in Indonesia. Household level food insecurity is generally caused by lack of livelihood opportunities and high food prices. At the individual level, aspects like morbidity, access to basic services like health, water and sanitation, education etc. can influence the levels of food insecurity. The aim of this study is to understand the correlation of household food security, environment, morbidity with food consumption and nutritional status of under-five children, especially in food insecurity area. A descriptive analytic study with cross sectional approach was conducted on 2 areas (Pejawaran and Punggelan) of Banjarnegara. Sample was chosen with simple random sampling which consists of 300 household with children 2-5 years old. Data collected include: sosio-economics household characteristic, sanitation and environment condition, under-five children morbidity, level consumption and nutiritonal status. Descriptive analytic was carried to all variables followed by bivariate test using Pearson and Spearman correlation. Measurement of household food security in this study used household overall energy intake. In correlated analyses, household food security, sosio-economics characteristic (parents’ education level, income, food and non-food expenditure), sanitation and environment condition was significantly positive correlated with under-five children energy and protein consumption. Under-five children morbidity was significantly negative correlated with energy and protein consumption. Under-five children nutritional status (stunted and underweight) was significantly positive correlated with household food security, sosio-economics characteristic (parents’ education level, income, food expenditure), sanitation and environment condition.
