The purpose of this research was to study the characteristics and potential production of swamp buffalo in wet and dry areas of Bima regency. The study used survey and direct observation methods on the targeted areas. The primary and secondary data were collected and analyzed descriptively. The buffaloes in Belo district were semi-intensively reared, whereas those in Wera district were extensively reared. The buffalo in Belo district had sex ratio, age of first mating, age of first parturition, calving rate, calf crop, calf mortality, periode of first mating after calving, and calving interval were 1:3, 3.4 years, 4.2 years, 91.1%, 76.2%, 12%, 2.4 months, 15.9 months respectively. Meanwhile, the reproductive characteristics in Wera district were 1:3, 3.3 years, 4.1 years, 84.2%, 70.3%, 17.1%, 2.3 months 14.4 months respectively. The buffaloes in Belo had BCS 2 (35%), BCS 3 (60%), and BCS 4 (5%), whereas in Wera have BCS 2 (45%), BCS 3 (50%) and BCS 4 (5%). In general, the buffaloes In Belo had better performance compared to that in Wera district. However, the potential land and feed resources for development of buffalo in Wera district still high compared with Belo district.
