The Salmonella disease is mostly found in laying hens that effect on egg production and increased mortality. Prevention of Salmonella infection can be conducted with probiotics. Probiotics are non pathogenic microbes which when ingested produces a positive effect on the health and physiology of the host that stimulates the immune system. This study aimed to determine the role of probiotic bacteria on the production performance and egg quality of laying hens that infected by Salmonella enteritidis transovarian. This research was conducted in the poultry cages, poultry unit of the Faculty of Animal Science, Bogor Agricultural University in September to October 2010. 60 head of laying hens were used for four treatments and three replications with each replication of five heads. The first treatment (P1), the control treatment, a second treatment (P2), hens were infected with S. enteritidis. Treatment three (P3), hens were infected with S. enteritidis and given probiotics once. Treatment fourth (P4), hens were infected with S. enteritidis and given probiotics twice. Feed intake, feed conversion, hen-day egg production, egg weight, Haugh unit, albumen weight, yolk weight and egg shell weight were observed. Research using completely randomized design (CRD) and the T test to see the effect of treatment. Feed consumption and percentage of hen day egg production were not difference between treatment P1 and P3, giving probiotics in animals which was infected with S. enteritidis help the healing process. P2 treatment increased feed consumption due to infection S. enteritidis resulted in efforts to recovery condition of laying hens. P4 treatment, feed intake and hen day egg production were not different from the P2 because of infection S. enteritidis and given probiotics twice can accelerate recovery of laying hens conditions. Lactic acid probiotic can increase the productivity of laying hens by recovery of laying hens form attacking of S. enteritidisen
