      Abstract

The ex-situ conservation success of the Eclectus parrot (Eclectus roratus) relies heavily on optimal nutritional management. This study evaluated the effects of artificial diets supplemented with Moringa leaf and maggot bio-extracts on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, and FSH levels. Six adult birds in a Replicated 3×3 Latin Square Design received a natural diet (P0), or natural diets supplemented with artificial feed without (P1) or with 1% bio-extract (P2) for 81 days. P2 significantly yielded the highest intake of fresh matter (72.39 g bird-1 day-1), ash, gross energy, and crude protein (13.11 g bird-1 day-1). The provision of artificial diets (P1 and P2) significantly improved dry matter digestibility compared to the natural diet (P0), however, the addition of bio-extracts did not significantly affect the digestibility of other nutrients. Mean FSH concentration decreased from 5.53 mIU mL-1 to 2.89 mIU mL-1 (p=0.028; Cohen’s d = 1.25), consistent with a passive reproductive phase, although significance was borderline and sensitive to a single individual. The hormone sampling design of this study did not permit testing the effect of dietary treatment on FSH concentration.
