      Abstract

Mud crab (Scylla serrata) is a high-value commodity whose seed supply still depends on wild catches. However, seed handling, including the tying technique used during transportation, has received little attention. This study aimed to analyze the effects of tying techniques on the physiological stress response, survival rate (SR), and economic benefit of mud crab seed during and after transportation. A completely randomized design was used with two treatments, namely tying of the chelipeds only (CS) and tying of the chelipeds, walking legs, and swimming legs (IS), with 60 crabs per treatment. The seeds were transported dry over 220 km for 5 hours and then reared for 14 days in RAS-based apartment boxes. During transportation, hemolymph glucose in CS increased by 20.67%, from 38.7 ± 2.66 mg dL?¹ to 46.7 ± 1.47 mg dL?¹, lower than in IS, which increased by 44.31%, from 42.2 ± 3.35 mg dL?¹ to 60.9 ± 5.80 mg dL?¹. The SR was descriptively higher in CS 86.67% than IS 81.67%. Changing the tying technique from IS to CS generated a net benefit of IDR 271 per crab. Overall, changing from IS to CS reduced physiological stress, tended to increase SR, and increased economic benefit.
