| dc.description.abstract | Vibriosis caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection is a major obstacle in Pacific white shrimp aquaculture. The use of macroalgae prebiotics has become a sustainable alternative to antibiotics. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Kappaphycus alvarezii polysaccharide extract as a prebiotic on the growth performance, immune response, and resistance of white shrimp infected with V. parahaemolyticus. Shrimp were cultured for 60 days using feed supplemented with different K. alvarezii extract doses: 0% uninfected (K-), 0% infected (K+), 1% (P1), 1.5% (P1.5), 2% (P2), and 2.5% (P2.5), followed by a seven-day challenge test with V.parahaemolyticus. The results showed that the P1.5 treatments significantly produced the highest specific growth rate and the lowest feed conversion ratio. Extract supplementation effectively suppressed Vibrio abundance in the intestine and hepatopancreas, and optimally stimulated non-specific immune responses such as total hemocyte count, respiratory burst, and phenoloxidase activity. Post-challenge, the P1.5 treatment recorded the highest survival rate (66%), whereas high doses (P2 and P2.5) triggered immune exhaustion which resulted in decreased resistance. In conclusion, K. alvarezii extract effectively serves as a prebiotic and immunostimulant with an optimum dose of 1.5%. | |
