      Abstract

Petroleum contamination degrades soil quality due to the accumulation of hydrocarbon compounds that are difficult to degrade naturally. This study aimed to investigate rhizosphere microbial activity during phytoremediation and to isolate hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria from the roots of Paspalum notatum and Vetiveria zizanioides L. Bacteria were isolated using an enrichment culture method in Bushnell Haas Mineral Salt (BHMS) medium with crude oil as the carbon source. Four hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial isolates were obtained, all capable of producing biosurfactants and degrading hydrocarbons. Bio-Oil Spill Dispersant (Bio-OSD) enhanced rhizosphere microbial activity and hydrocarbon degradation efficiency, indicating the potential of indigenous root-associated bacteria to improve phytoremediation of petroleum-contaminated soils.
