      Abstract

Soft-shell crab farming in apartment-box systems requires continuous efforts to improve production performance and business performance through the implementation of appropriate feed management. This study aimed to evaluate the production and business performance of soft-shell mud crab (Scylla serrata) farming in a recirculating crab apartment system using different feed types. A completely randomized design was employed with three treatments: trash fish, green mussels, and an equal combination of both feeds, each with 55 replicates, over a 60-day culture period. The feed was provided twice daily at 08:00 and 17:00 (WIB) at 10% of the crab's body weight. One hour after feeding, the remaining feed was removed by siphoning. Trash fish was cut into two pieces with an average weight of approximately 7.67±1.21 g per piece, while green mussels were provided whole, including the shells, with an average weight of approximately 4.3±2.11 g. The results showed that feeding green mussels produced the highest absolute weight growth rate of 0.42 g day?¹ and the lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 11.06, compared with trash fish, which resulted in an absolute weight growth rate of 0,26 g day?¹ and an FCR of 29.73. In terms of business performance, the green mussel and combined-feed treatments achieved revenue/cost ratios of 1.01 and 1.04, respectively, which were higher than that of the trash fish treatment 0.82. Therefore, the use of green mussels resulted in the best production and business performance.
