      Abstract

Crude palm oil (CPO) has the potential to be used as a biodiesel feedstock and as a source of value-added ß-carotene. This study aimed to compare the environmental impacts of CPO-based biodiesel production without ß-carotene extraction and biodiesel production preceded by ß-carotene extraction using a Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent (NADES). The assessment was conducted using the Life Cycle Assessment method with a gate-to-gate approach, a functional unit of processing 10 kg of CPO, SimaPro software, and the CML-IA Baseline method. Scenario 1 produced 8.529 kg of biodiesel, with environmental impacts of 30.930 kg CO2-eq for global warming, 0.0468 kg SO2-eq for acidification, and 0.2592 kg PO4³?-eq for eutrophication. Scenario 2 produced 8.139 kg of biodiesel and a carotenoid-rich extract fraction, with impacts of 141.330 kg CO2-eq for global warming, 0.3189 kg SO2-eq for acidification, and 0.3695 kg PO4³?-eq for eutrophication. The results showed that Scenario 1 had better environmental performance across all impact categories analyzed. Scenario 2 still requires optimization, particularly in the use of NADES, solvents, water, and energy.
