The Etawah Grade (EG) goat is an Indonesian local breed with superior production and reproduction performance. This study aimed to investigate the association of the GHR gene (candidate gene for growth and litter size) in EG goats. A total of 130 EG goats were used to analyze the polymorphism of the GHR gene locus. The association of the GHR gene with growth traits was evaluated in 130 goats, whereas 58 does were examined to determine its association with litter size. A novel variant of the GHR gene (c.1231 A>C) was genotyped using the PCRRFLP technique. The relationships between the genotypes and phenotypes were
analyzed using a general linear model. The GHR gene locus showed polymorphism with two genotypes, namely AA and AC. The genetic variant of the GHR gene was significantly associated (P<0.05) with six-month weight. Goats with the AA genotype showed higher body weight than the AC genotype. The association of the GHR gene with birth weight, weaning weight, and litter size was not found statistically significant in this study, which might be due to smaller sample size. It is pospulated that this genetic variant of the GHR gene could be a marker for enhancing growth performance (post-weaning stage). Kambing Peranakan Etawah (PE) adalah jenis kambing lokal Indonesia dengan performa produksi dan reproduksi yang unggul. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki hubungan gen GHR (gen kandidat untuk sifat pertumbuhan dan ukuran anak) pada kambing PE. Sebanyak 130 ekor kambing PE digunakan untuk menganalisis polimorfisme lokus gen GHR. Hubungan gen GHR dengan sifat pertumbuhan dievaluasi pada 130 ekor kambing, sedangkan 58 ekor kambing betina diperiksa untuk menentukan hubungannya dengan litter size. Varian baru gen GHR (c.1231 A>C) diidentifikasi genotipnya menggunakan teknik PCR-RFLP. Hubungan antara genotip dan fenotip dianalisis menggunakan general linear model. Lokus gen GHR menunjukkan polimorfisme dengan dua genotip yang diamati, yaitu AA dan AC. Varian genetik gen GHR secara signifikan berhubungan (P<0,05) dengan bobot badan enam bulan. Kambing dengan genotip AA menunjukkan berat badan lebih tinggi daripada genotip AC. Hubungan gen GHR dengan bobot lahir, bobot sapih, dan litter size tidak ditemukan signifikan secara statistik dalam penelitian ini, yang dapat diakibatkan jumlah sampel yang relatif sedikit. Diduga bahwa varian genetik gen GHR ini dapat menjadi penanda untuk meningkatkan performa pertumbuhan (periode pasca-sapih).
