      Abstract

One of the greatest potentials of nutmeg oil is as a flavouring agent. Flavouring agent products in both domestic and international markets have strict requirements for safrole and methyl eugenol limits. The removal of these compounds can be achieved using vacuum fractionation technology, designed through Aspen HYSYS simulation. The resulting design can produce two grades of nutmeg oil with low levels of safrole and methyl eugenol, depending on their purity. The simulation process conditions include a pressure of 15 mbar and a reflux ratio of 2:1. The reboiler temperatures required to produce Grade A products are 78.12- 90.46°C during Fractionation Stage 1, 125-138.2°C during Fractionation Stage 2, and 161-161.5°C during Fractionation Stage 3. For Grade B, the reboiler temperatures are 76.59-85.78°C during Fractionation Stage 1, 126.6-139.9°C during Fractionation Stage 2, and 153.7-157°C during Fractionation Stage 3. Validation is carried out using a spinning band distillation unit.
