Social Representations of Agriculture Youth Farmers in the Dryland Agriculture Community (Case Desa Pasawahan, Kecamatan Banjarsari, Kabupaten Ciamis, Jawa Barat).

Abstract

Lack of interest in the young labor force to work in the agricultural sector became one of concern for agricultural sustainability in Indonesia. The decline would have youth-related social representations of farm youth. How young people view rural agriculture is an interesting thing to learn. The purpose of this research was to determine the social representation of children of farmers for agriculture and how this relates to socio-economic characteristics, in Desa Pasawahan, Kabupaten Ciamis, Jawa Barat. The number of respondents in this research were 40 people with incidental sampling, with 16-25 years age and they are farmer's son. In general, the social representations of youth tends to positive. However, farm youth still see agriculture in terms of workload, so they are unwilling to work in the agricultural sector for the future. Both social representation of agriculture and farm work in farm youths are the same. In general, youth farm represented that agriculture and work of farmers as an agricultural activities which is related to physical strength on farms. In contrast to agriculture and farm work, the young peasant farmers represent a positive affection from professional farmers. To land, a young peasant represent as a means of working agricultural land conditions that are less satisfying. Meanwhile, dry land, farm youth in general represent the negative affection of dry land. Individual characteristics associated with farm youth social representations shown on the social representation of farmers, land, and dry land.
