      Abstract
Daily activities of orangutans are divided into five main types such as, locomotion, resting, eating, nesting, and social interaction. Locomotion is a displacement activity conducted by the orangutan location from one place to another. Almost all the orangutans live arboreally. This study aimed to identify the type of locomotion of orangutans in Schmutzer Primate Center, Jakarta. The object of this study was ten Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus Linn.) with different ages and sex classes. Observation was conducted using focal animal sampling from May to October 2010. The relationship of each mode of orangutan’s locomotion towards sex class and age were analyzed by t-test. Orangutan’s dominant position on base used Quadrupedal walk and horizontal position used Thorso-orthograde suspensory locomotion mode. Sex class, age, and environmental factors such as temperature, air humidity, and rainfall have an influence on locomotion.
