      Abstract
Suren (Toona sinensis) is a plant which almost all of its parts have some medical effects. Its leaf and bark have been reported to have antioxidant effects, using in vivo and in vitro tests. The aim of this research was to know the potency of 70% ethanol extract of T. sinensis bark as antidiabetic compound, using in vivo test that involved Sprague-Dawley rats. Extraction was done by maceration. The in vivo test was designed to compare medical effect of 150 mg/kg rat body weight (BW) T. sinensis bark extract and 300 mg/kg BW T. sinensis bark extract with glibenclamide (with the dose of 2.5 mg/kg BW). Experiment parameters examined were feed consumption and body mass during adaptation and treatment phase, blood glucose level during treatment phase, and histopathological condition of the pancreases. Extraction process of T. sinensis bark yielded 4.8% of dry extract. The analysis towards blood glucose level showed that the 150 mg/kg BW T. sinensis bark extract treatment gave the highest blood glucose level lowering effect, which was 70.82%. On the other side, the 300 mg/kg BW T. sinensis bark extract and glibenclamide treatments gave 51.96% and 68.92% of the blood glucose level lowering effect, respectively. Histopathological observation revealed that the rat which came from the group of 150 mg/kg BW T. sinensis bark extract treatment has a better condition than those two other treatments.
