While using preserved forage in TMRs offers an alternative to the limitations of fresh forage, it can alter feed quality. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of forage preservation methods on the physicochemical properties and acceptability of TMRs for sheep. A Randomized Block Design (RBD) was employed, featuring three treatments and four blocks based on production timing and sheep weight: P1 (fresh forage TMR + concentrate), P2 (silage forage TMR + concentrate), and P3 (hay forage TMR + concentrate). Data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Duncan’s post-hoc test. The results indicated that the forage preservation method significantly affected (p<0.05) forage texture characteristics, TMR physical properties, dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) losses, and sheep acceptability; however, it did not significantly affect (p>0.05) NDF, ADF, hemicellulose, or peNDF content. TMRs containing silage resulted in lower DM and OM losses and elicited a better initial intake response compared to TMRs containing hay. In conclusion, silage holds greater potential than hay as a forage source for formulating TMRs for sheep.
