dc.description.abstractSamia cynthia ricini (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) adalah ulat sutra liar non-diapause yang terdomestikasi, sehingga laju pertumbuhannya yang cepat membatasi sinkronisasi penetasan dengan kondisi lingkungan. Penelitian ini mengkaji perkembangan embrio, karakteristik penetasan, dan kinerja pasca-embrio S. c. ricini dalam memperpanjang masa simpan telur pada suhu rendah melalui aplikasi etilen glikol sebagai zat pelindung. Telur berumur 48 jam direndam dalam etilen glikol (1 M, 1,5 M, dan 2 M) selama 3, 5, dan 7 menit, kemudian disimpan pada suhu 10 °C selama 7 dan 10 hari. Konsentrasi etilen glikol paling konsisten memengaruhi respons biologis telur dan pertumbuhan pascaembrio. Pada penyimpanan 7 hari, perlakuan etilen glikol 1 M (3–5 menit) memberikan penundaan penetasan yang lebih baik, dan 1 M (7 menit) menunjukkan viabilitas yang lebih tinggi berdasarkan keberhasilan pembentukan kokon. Penyimpanan 10 hari menurunkan daya tetas drastis dengan mortalitas hingga 100% pada instar awal. Etilen glikol memberikan perlindungan parsial terhadap embrio, dan efektivitasnya bergantung pada konsentrasi serta durasi paparan. Batas optimal penyimpanan telur S. c. ricini pada suhu 10 °C adalah =7 hari.
dc.description.abstractSamia cynthia ricini (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) is a non-diapause domesticated wild silkworm, such that its rapid growth rate limits the synchronization of hatching with environmental conditions. This study examined the embryonic development, hatching characteristics, and post-embryonic performance of S. c. ricini in extending the shelf life of eggs at low temperatures through the application of ethylene glycol as a preservative. Eggs aged 48 hours were immersed in ethylene glycol (1 M, 1.5 M, and 2 M) for 3, 5, and 7 minutes, then stored at 10 °C for 7 and 10 days. Ethylene glycol concentration most consistently influenced the biological response of the eggs and post-embryonic growth. At 7-day storage, the 1 M (3–5 minutes) provided better hatching delay, while 1 M (7 minutes) showed higher viability based on successful cocoon formation. At 10-day storage, hatchability was drastically reduced, with mortality reaching 100% in the early instars. Ethylene glycol provided partial protection to the embryos, with effectiveness depending on the concentration and exposure duration. The optimal storage limit for S. c. ricini eggs at 10 °C is =7 days.
