      Abstract

Melon is one of the horticultural commodities with high economic value and has great potential for cultivation. The limited availability of high-quality domestic hybrid varieties has led farmers to rely on imported seeds, which pose risks such as high costs, uncertain supply continuity, and poor adaptability. This study aimed to identify the morphological characteristics and fruit quality of several melon genotypes for the development of improved varieties. The research was conducted in the greenhouse of the Leuwikopo IPB Experimental Station and the Post-harvest Laboratory of the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture IPB from June to October 2024. The genetic materials evaluated were 14 genotypes, 11 melon genotypes from the PKHT IPB collection and 3 commercial hybrid varieties as checks (Glamour F1, Gracia F1, and Legita F1). This experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with a single factor (genotype) and four replications. The results showed that genotype had a significant effect on all quantitative traits. Correlation analysis among traits indicated that fruit diameter was positively correlated with fruit weight and negatively correlated with fruit skin hardness. Genotypes R3, R23, and R32 were identified as potential parental lines for melon breeding programs, while hybrid genotypes H1, H2, and H6 showed potential for further development as new superior varieties. These selected hybrids may be evaluated further in muti-location trials to elucidate their adaptation in different environments.
