      Abstract

The oil palm plantation industry is characterized by high capital requirements and long investment cycles. Plantation development and maintenance, processing facilities, infrastructure, and replanting programs require substantial financing, with a significant portion of expenditures incurred well before investments generate stable cash flows. These characteristics make oil palm plantation companies particularly relevant for capital structure analysis because decisions regarding the use of internal funds and debt are important for sustaining long-term investment and financing capacity. During the 2017–2024 period, the sampled companies exhibited considerable variation in capital structure. The Debt to Equity Ratio (DER) averaged 1.3498 and ranged from 0.1024 to 4.9638, indicating substantial differences in the use of debt relative to equity across companies. This study aims to analyze the characteristics and development of capital structure in oil palm plantation companies; examine the effects of profitability, firm size, sales growth, liquidity, and corporate governance on capital structure; and assess both the direct effect of institutional ownership and its role in moderating the relationship between profitability and capital structure. Profitability is examined separately using two proxies: Return on Assets (ROA), which represents the firm's ability to generate earnings from its assets, and Return on Equity (ROE), which represents the return generated on shareholders' equity. The study uses secondary data obtained from the financial statements and annual reports of oil palm plantation companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange during 2017–2024. Based on purposive sampling, the sample consists of 11 companies, forming a balanced panel of 88 observations. After constructing lagged variables, applying first-differencing, and forming instruments, the dynamic panel estimation uses 66 effective observations. Capital structure is measured using DER, while the explanatory variables consist of either ROA or ROE, firm size, sales growth, the Current Ratio (CR), the proportion of independent commissioners as a proxy for corporate governance, and institutional ownership. The analysis employs the two-step difference Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimator using STATA across four model specifications to accommodate the dynamic nature of capital structure and mitigate potential endogeneity. The results show that ROA has a negative and statistically significant effect on capital structure in Model 1 and Model 3. This finding supports the Pecking Order Theory, which suggests that firms with a stronger ability to generate earnings have greater internal financing capacity and therefore tend to rely less on debt. In contrast, ROE does not have a statistically significant effect in either Model 2 or Model 4. Sales growth has a positive and significant effect in Model 2 and Model 3, indicating that increased business activity may raise financing requirements for working capital and investment. Firm size has a negative and significant effect in Model 3, whereas liquidity does not show a statistically significant effect in the specifications in which it is included. Corporate governance, proxied by the proportion of independent commissioners, has a negative and statistically significant effect at the 10 percent level in Model 1 but is not significant in the other specifications. Institutional ownership has a negative and statistically significant direct effect on capital structure in Model 4. This finding indicates an association between institutional investor monitoring and corporate debt policy in that specification. However, neither the interaction between institutional ownership and ROA nor the interaction between institutional ownership and ROE is statistically significant. Therefore, based on the estimated moderation models, the study finds no empirical evidence that institutional ownership moderates the relationship between profitability and capital structure. All four models satisfy the main GMM validity criteria based on second-order serial correlation tests, instrument validity tests, and control of the number of instruments. Overall, the findings indicate that capital structure policies in oil palm plantation companies are associated with firms' fundamental financial conditions, particularly their ability to generate earnings from assets and the financing requirements accompanying business growth. For management, the findings emphasize the importance of improving asset productivity and aligning debt utilization with cash-generating capacity and investment requirements. For institutional investors and boards of commissioners, oversight of borrowing purposes, repayment capacity, and financing risks should be strengthened to support financially sustainable financing decisions.
