      Abstract

Oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) have potential as biomass fuel for supplying heat to continuous pyrolysis processes; however, stable heat supply and effective energy utilization remain challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a Top-Lit Updraft (TLUD) biomass burner fueled by EFB through experimental testing and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling. Experiments were conducted at fuel feeding rates of 7, 8, and 9 kg h?¹ by comparing intermittent feeding of shredded EFB with continuous feeding of EFB pellets using a conveyor at an air velocity of 8,94 m s?¹. The evaluation included temperature distribution, thermal characteristics, energy balance, flue gas flow, and system efficiency. The results showed that continuous pellet feeding produced a more homogeneous temperature distribution with lower fluctuations than intermittent shredded EFB feeding, although shredded EFB achieved higher peak temperatures. Increasing the feeding rate increased the combustion energy and useful heat, but also increased heat losses, resulting in lower thermal efficiency. Thermal efficiency ranged from 5,39 to 7,18%. The CFD model successfully reproduced the experimental temperature distribution, with error ranges of 2,37–13,81% for shredded EFB and 0,82–9,11% for pellets. These findings indicated that continuous pellet feeding provided a more stable heat supply for continuous pyrolysis processes.
