Handline fishing gear is widely used by small scale fishers at the Cilacap Waters to catch large pelagic species. Local fishers at the Cilacap waters generally continue to use single hook systems to catch tuna and skipjack tuna. This study aimed to determine the species composition and quantity of catches, the size distribution of dominant fish species, and the most effective hook construction. The study applied an experimental fishing method over a 10 days fishing operation using three hook configurations, single hook, double hook, and quadruple hook, which were operated simultaneously under relatively similar fishing conditions. The results showed that the total catch consisted of 257 individuals from five fish species, with yellowfin tuna dominating the catch at 72.8%. The double hook configuration produced the highest catch, totaling 104 individuals, with a target species percentation of 96%, whereas the quadruple hook configuration resulted in the lowest catch. These findings suggest that the use of double hook tends to be more effective, thus allowing it to be recommended for use by handline fishers operating at the Cilacap waters.
