      Abstract

This study analyzes the effects of real GDP, money market interest rate, USD exchange rate, CNY exchange rate, and bilateral trade balance of ASEAN countries with the United States and China on real money demand in six ASEAN countries over the period 2010–2024 using the ARDL-PMG method. The results show that in the long run, real GDP and bilateral trade balance have a significant positive effect, while the interest rate and CNY exchange rate have a significant negative effect on real money demand; the USD exchange rate is not significant. In the short run, the effects vary across countries. The negative effect of CNY indicates a tendency toward currency substitution, while its positive effect in one country in the short run reflects an increase in transactional liquidity needs. These findings suggest that monetary authorities need to broaden their monitoring beyond domestic indicators to include CNY exchange rate movements and bilateral trade balance developments, in order to anticipate changes in money demand, maintain adequate liquidity, and enhance the effectiveness of monetary policy transmission.
