      Abstract

The prevalence of diarrhea in Indonesia in 2020 reached 9,8%. Gastrointestinal infection is related to poor sanitation and bacterial contamination. The gastrointestinal infection-causing bacteria used in this study include Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhimurium. Commercial antibiotics, as one of the treatment solutions for diarrhea, can cause to antibiotic resistance if used excessively. Surian (Toona sinensis) is known to have an effect as an alternative antibacterial agent. This research aims to test the effectiveness of acetone extract from surian bark against diarrhea-causing bacteria using the disk diffusion method based on the inhibition zone formed. The methods used in this study include maceration extraction, preparation of culture media and bacterial suspension preparation, and antibacterial activity using the disk diffusion method. The results show that the extract concentration of 80 mg/mL exhibited the highest antibacterial activity against all three bacteria. The MIC of the acetone extract of the surian stem bark indicated a bacteriostatic effect, while the MBC was not determined within the tested concentration range.
