      Ampas Tebu sebagai Katalis Heterogen dalam Pembuatan Biodiesel dari Minyak Jelantah

      Abstract
      Ketergantungan global terhadap bahan bakar fosil serta dampaknya terhadap lingkungan mendorong pengembangan energi alternatif berkelanjutan. Biodiesel merupakan salah satu energi alternatif yang berpotensi dikembangkan. Penggunaan katalis dalam proses produksinya menjadi pilihan yang menjanjikan karena beberapa kelebihan dari jenis ini, diantaranya mudah dipisahkan dari produk, dapat digunakan kembali, serta meningkatkan efisiensi proses produksi. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengevaluasi pemanfaatan ampas tebu sebagai katalis heterogen dalam produksi biodiesel dari minyak jelantah. Ampas tebu diproses melalui pengeringan, penggilingan, kalsinasi pada suhu 500, 600, dan 700 °C, serta impregnasi KOH untuk meningkatkan aktivitas katalis. Karakterisasi katalis dilakukan untuk mengkaji sifat struktural, morfologi, dan kimia katalis. Proses produksi biodiesel dilakukan melalui reaksi transesterifikasi minyak jelantah dengan metanol menggunakan katalis tersebut pada variasi suhu reaksi 50, 60, dan 70 °C. Kualitas biodiesel dievaluasi berdasarkan parameter rendemen, densitas, dan angka asam sesuai dengan standar nasional. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kalsinasi katalis 600 °C dengan suhu reaksi 60 °C memberikan performa optimal, ditandai dengan rendemen tertinggi serta densitas yang memenuhi standar. Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa ampas tebu berpotensi dikembangkan sebagai katalis yang efisien dan ramah lingkungan, sekaligus mendukung konsep ekonomi sirkular dan keberlanjutan energi.
       
      The global dependence on fossil fuels and their environmental impact have driven the development of sustainable alternative energy sources. Biodiesel is one of the most promising renewable energy alternatives. The use of heterogeneous catalysts in biodiesel production has become an attractive approach due to their advantages, including easy separation from the reaction products, reusability, and improved process efficiency. This study aims to evaluate the use of sugarcane bagasse as a heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel production from waste cooking oil. Sugarcane bagasse was processed by drying, grinding, calcination at 500, 600, and 700 °C, and KOH impregnation to enhance its catalysts activity. Catalyst characterization was performed to examine the structural, morphological, and chemical properties of the catalyst. Biodiesel was produced via transesterification of waste cooking oil with methanol at reaction temperature variations of 50, 60, and 70 °C, then evaluated based on yield, density, and acid value according to national standards. The results showed that calcination at 600 °C with a reaction temperature of 60 °C yielded optimal performance, indicated by the highest yield and density value meeting the required standards. These findings confirm that sugarcane bagasse can be developed as an efficient and eco-friendly catalyst, supporting circular economy principles and energy sustainability.
