Information System Design For Packaging Development : A Case Study At Pt Nestle Indonesia Jakarta

Abstract

The background of the study is encouraged by the issue of packaging development at PT Nestle Indonesia (PT NI). In facing globally competitive market, Packaging Department of PT NI is forced to create innovation in design and development of packaging to meet customer demand. Packaging development process and other related projects at PT NI involves cross­funflional teams- across organization : Operations Division, Marketing Division, and Purchasing Division. The process encompasses approvals from other runctional departments, and it is frequently being delayed especially when there 1s no presence of related person. And also there is no integrated information sys em to support the packaging development process. This problem leads to, consumer packaged goad's risk being late to market, underdelivering on product quality or innovations, and running over budget. Therefore, it becomes necessary for the management of Packaging Department to build integrated information systems in order to speed-up operational process of packaging development. Furthermore, then the problem statement can be summarized, as follows : (1) How is the preliminary study in terms of implementing information system of packaging development ? (2) How is the existing system of packaging development process which have been implemented at PT NI ? (3) What are the components of Information System in supporting design and development of packaging system ? (4) Which data and information are needed by end-user of packaging development to build integrated information technology ? (5) How is the proposed information system design and software prototyping for packaging development at PT NI ? The purposes of this study are : (1) To describe the workflow of the existing system at packaging development process and to identify the weaknesses and problems within the process, (2) To identify the components of information system within the process of packaging development at PT NI, and (3) To develop information system design and software prototyping which support the process of packaging development effectively and efficiently. The study was conducted at Packaging Department of PT NI, starting on July until September 2002. The company is located at JI. Letjen T. B. Simatupang Kav 88, Jakarta. The methodology used in this study is descriptive method with case study approach. The system development is applied by using System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) approach combined with Prototyping. The result of this study is analyzed from qualitative data, which are primary and secondary data. The primary data are taken from direct observation through deep-interview with end-user, third party (supplier) and other cross functional department. Whilst, the secondary data are taken from literatures and company's profiles/data. The system development is carried out into 4 (four) steps as follows : ( 1) Systems Investigation provide preliminary study which investigate the existing system and identifies the weaknesses and problems of that system. (2) Systems analysis execute in - depth study of end user information needs that produces functional reqwrements that are used as the basis for the design of a new information system.
