Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogels can be synthesized from bacterial cellulose. The reaction of CMC and succinic acid can be used as an antibacterial with the addition of TiO2 (Rutile). This study was to synthesize hydrogel-based antibacterial CMC-TiO2. The addition of succinic acid against CMC will form a crosslinking by the esterification reaction between the -OH group of succinic acid with polycarboxylic acid of CMC. The product was evaluated by the degree of substitution (DS), swelling ratio, water content, pH, the infrared spectrum, microphotographs, antibacterial test, and difractogram. The resulted DS was approximately 0.2368. The swelling ratio was affected by the TiO2 concentration. The higher the TiO2 concentration the higher the swelling ratio. CMC-succinic-TiO2 was able to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in each TiO2 concentration. The increasing TiO2 concentration was followed by the higher capability of bacteria inhibition. Therefore, CMCsuccinic- TiO2 is potential as a material for antibacterialen
