      Abstract
      Added value of oil palm beside by changing methyl ester oleate can also be carried out by methyl ester sulfonate (surfactant) production. Surfactant is surface active agent that can reduce interfacial tension (IFT) between two materials, liquid-liquid, liquid-solid, or liquid-gas. Methyl ester sulfonate (MES) is an anionic surfactant, negative charge out its hydrophilic group has surface active characteristic. Methyl Ester Sulfonate (MES) was prepared by sulfonation with SO3 gas in a falling single tube film reactor, carried out at 80 °C with an interval of 60 to 360 minutes. The results showed 360 minutes process with neutralization was the best treatment with IFT value of 7.7 × 10-3 dyne/cm, average active matter content and acid value of 10.8770% and 0.1889 mg KOH/g, iodine number of 27.4687 mg I2/g MES, and density of 0.98619 g/ml.
       
      Peningkatan nilai tambah minyak sawit selain menjadi metil ester oleat juga dapat melalui pembentukan metil ester sulfonat (surfaktan). Surfaktan merupakan zat aktif permukaan yang dapat menurunkan tegangan antarmuka antara dua bahan baik berupa cairan-cairan, cairan-padatan, atau cairan-gas. Metil ester sulfonat (MES) adalah salah satu jenis surfaktan anionik, muatan negatif pada gugus hidrofiliknya bersifat aktif permukaan. MES dibuat melalui proses sulfonasi menggunakan gas SO3 dalam reaktor film turun tabung tunggal (STFR), yang dilakukan pada suhu 80 °C dengan selang waktu 60 sampai 360 menit. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan lama proses 360 menit dengan netralisasi merupakan perlakuan terbaik dengan nilai tegangan antarmuka sebesar 7.7 × 10-3 dyne/cm, rerata kandungan bahan aktif dan bilangan asam sebesar 10.8770% dan 0.1889 mg KOH/g MES, bilangan iodin 27.4687 mg I2/g MES, densitas 0.98619 g/mL.
