      Abstract
The aim of the study was revealed the anatomy of the skull of male Kalimantan orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) related to the function of the elements of the head and the daily behavior of the orangutan. The study was conducted by observing the anatomical features of the orangutan skull and compared it with literatures related to the anatomy of the skull in human and animals such as gorilla and chimpanzee that have close taxonomis and anatomical relationship with orangutan and the skulls of other animals. The results showed that some characteristics of orangutan skull were observed. The sutures between the bone were unclearly and presumed that orangutan was old. On the other hand, there was highly developed crest in the calvaria of the skull: the frontal crest, the external sagittal crest, and the nuchal crest. The frontal crest suggested the origin of cheek pad that was highly developed in the male orangutan. The external sagittal crest suggested as the origin of the temporale muscle and the nuchal crest suggested as the origin of the extensor muscles of the neck and head. In addition, the most developed of zygomatic arch was formed by the zygomatic process of temporal bone and the temporal process of zygomatic bone. The most developed parts of the orangutan skull was the splanchnocranii than that of the neurocranii portion, which looked prominent and lengthened of the mouth area. Teeth formula of this animal was 2 (I 2 / 2, C 1 / 1, P 2 / 2, M 3 / 3), that looked highly developed of canine teeth which was showed as orangutan sexual dimorphism.
