dc.description.abstract | One of the Marine Sanctuary or Daerah Perlindungan Laut (DPL) in the Pangkajene Kepulauan (Pangkep) district is located at Mattiro Labangeng village. It was founded as an effort to save coral reef ecosystems and to prosper the rural community; especially the local fishermen. However, the existence of this DPL does not automatically solve problems that arose out of coral reef ecosystem management. Few initiatives are therefore needed to restore the original condition gradually. In order to investigate the roles and benefits of the presence of DPL in the conservation of coral reef ecosystem, an assessment is necessary in evaluating the success of the effectiveness of the management of DPL at Mattiro Labangeng village. By this regards, the study intends to evaluate indicators of the effectiveness and to assess how effective is the management of DPL at Mattiro Labangeng village. The research was conducted both in April and September 2010. It was done in territorial waters closed to Mattiro Labangeng village as well as among the villagers of this village, which is located in the Liukang Tupabbiring Utara subdistrict of Pangkep district. Methods applied for this research was field observation, semi-structured interviews and library search over secondary data. Field observation was conducted to obtain ecological data. Each data are collected by different methods: Point Intercept Transect (PIT) method was used to collect data on the condition of coral reefs; Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method was utilized to observe reef fish; and in situ observation method was deployed to collect data of water quality. For institutions and socio-economic information, data collection was conducted in several stages beginning from observation, semi-structured interviews and survey. Evaluative analysis on the management of DPL at Mattiro Labangen village is done in two phases, namely (1) Determining the effectiveness of selected indicators through stakeholder analysis based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), (2) Describing the effectiveness of DPL at Mattiro Labangeng village by analyzing several indicators above based on Amoeba, which was obtained from a technique of measuring the value of each indicator compared to the CTV (Critical Threshold Value). Based on all of indicators can be considered as the management of the DPL at Village Mattiro Labangeng effective. Strategic approaches in managing the DPL at Mattiro Labangeng village effectively can be done by several integrated plans with a full attention remained paid to ecological, socio-economic and institutional issues. These strategies include protecting DPL areas, upgrading capacity and their understanding of coral reef ecosystems. | en |
