      Abstract
The lempuyang gajah herbal tea has been reported to reduce blood cholesterol concentration, but reports on its potency to reduced blood lipid peroxide concentration is not known. The objective of this research is to determine the potency of this mixture of lempuyang gajah (Zingiber zerumbet L.) and green tea (Camellia sinensis) as antioxidant in vivo, particularly in hypercholesterolemic condition. Twenty six rats were divided into normal group and cholesterol feed group. Cholesterol feed group (HK) were divided into 3 groups: hypercholesterolemic (HK I), herbal tea dosage 1 (HK II), herbal tea dosage 2 (HK III). Hypercholesterolemia was induced by cholesterol diet (1.5%) and PTU (0.01%) administered orally for 6 weeks. Afterward, animals were given cholesterol free standard diet. Extract of herbal tea were administered orally for another 4 weeks with dosage of lempuyang gajah:green tea= 1:2 (dosage 1) and 2.5:2 (dosage 2). Lipid peroxide concentration was analyzed in week-0,2,4,6,8, and 10 using spectrophotometry method at 533 nm. Cholesterol fat and PTU induction significantly (p<0.05) increased lipid peroxide concentration in blood of HK (40.31%) compared with normal group. Reduction in blood lipid peroxide concentration of HK III was more (40.50%) than HK II (32.57%) at the end of experiment.
