Tuna is a very important group of fish traded and consumed worldwide. The increasing needs on this commodity have brought a significant attention to study many aspects of the fish, e.g. conservation, fishing, and management. Bungus and Muara Padang are two important tuna and skipjack tuna landing sites in the West Sumatera. This paper describes a proses of data collection of tuna skipjack tuna production in the two sites, bias of tuna skipjack tuna production data from actual production, and a proposed procedure to improve data quality of tuna skipjack tuna landings in Bungus and Muara Padang. Current practice of data collection of tuna skipjack tuna landings in the two sites did not include measuring the fish weights. Local statistics of tuna skipjack tuna used reports that built on daily compilation of records from fish auction that described number of fish (not the weight) and the price payed by the buyers. For tuna and skipjack tuna, Statistical analysis (pair t-test) on the weight estimates (made by fisheries officials and fleet managers) and actual weights conclude a significant difference, eg, the estimates were generally lower than the actual weights (a = 0,05). we should be careful with estimates made by fisheries officials or fleet managers when weighing is absence in landing sites, especially when data are fish stock assessment. Some recommended improvements include implementation of proper data collection procedure and good coordination on data collection and data sharing among stakeholders of the tuna fisheries.en
