Curry leaves (Murray koenigii), a traditional Indian medicinal plant is one of the herbal plants that has been reported to have high in vitro antioxidant activity. This study was designed to investigate phytochemical compound and hepatoprotective activity of ethanol:water (1:1) extract of curry leaves (EWEC) on paracetamol toxic dose induced acute liver damage in Sprague Dawley rats in vivo. Hepatoprotection activity was measured by using biochemical parameters such as enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) serum level and to observe the histopathology study of liver. Twenty five rats were divided into 5 groups: normal group (N), negative control group/KN (paracetamol 500 mg/Kg BB), positive control group/KP (Curliv-plus® 42,86 mg/Kg BB), EWEC groups doses 200 mg/Kg BB and 300 mg/Kg BB. Curry leave was extracted with a solvent mixture of ethanol:water (1:1) which resulted about 19,2% rendement. Phytochemical test indicates that EWEC contains alkaloids, saponins, steroids, and tannins. Transaminase enzyme serum analysis shows that the induction of EWEC 300 and KP treatment gives a significant effect (p<0.01) on hepatoprotective compared to EWEC 200. However, liver histopathology shows that there is a necrosis hepatocytes on KN group, regeneration on KP group, vacuolisation on EWEC 200, and normal cells on EWEC 300. These results indicate that the antioxidant of EWEC is potential to protect liver cells.en
