Disertasi ini ditulis berdasarkan hasil-hasil percobaan yang menngarah pada seleksi beberapa kultivar unggul nasional dan mekanisme toleransi kacang tanah terhadap stres kekeringan pada fase vegetatif dan generatif. Berdasarkan hasil seleksi dan mekanisme tersebut dilakukan teknik rekayasa genetika untuk mendapatkan tanaman yang toleran kekeringan melalui mekanisme over ekspresi gen P5CS - penyandi ensim kunci biosintesis prolina. This dissertation was written based on results of experiments directed toward identification of drought tolerance among peanut cultivars grown in Indonesia and determination of the tolerance mechanisms. Subsequently, genetic engineering was employed to develop drought tolerance transgenic plants (peanut and tobacco) through over-expression of P5CS gene encoding the key enzyme for proline biosynthesis.
