      Abstract

In tropical regions such as Indonesia, beetles are among the most active wood-destroying insects alongside termites. They attack a wide range of wood conditions, from living trees and weakened or dead trees to freshly cut logs, sawn timber, and even dry, processed wood products such as furniture. Among these, ambrosia beetles are particularly known for infesting freshly cut logs and stressed trees. Infested wood is characterized by numerous small holes accompanied by black stains caused by fungal hyphae associated with the beetles. This fungal symbiosis significantly reduces wood quality, leading to a substantial decline in its market value. In Indonesia, ambrosia beetle infestation poses a serious challenge, especially for forest concession holders outside Java, as it continuously threatens the quality of commercially valuable timber such as ramin (Gonystylus bancanus Kurz), which has high economic value and strong market demand.
