Offshore platforms (OPs) are essential structures in the oil and gas industry. After the end of their operational life, these platforms must undergo decommissioning through dismantling and site restoration, which is costly and often difficult to implement. If not properly managed, residual structures may cause environmental pollution, damage marine ecosystems, and disrupt the livelihoods of coastal communities. One alternative for site restoration is converting decommissioned offshore platforms into artificial reefs. This study aims to analyze the utilization forms of offshore platforms in the Makassar Strait waters and to assess the feasibility potential of artificial reef areas based on ecological and socio-economic aspects. The research was conducted from January to March 2026 through data collection, including: (1) forms of utilization of decommissioned offshore platforms at the study site; (2) ecological aspects assessed through seabed topography and water depth conditions, aquatic biodiversity, and the presence of Indonesian Archipelagic Sea Lanes (IASL/ALKI); and (3) socio-economic aspects related to the presence of decommissioned offshore platforms to be converted into artificial reefs, including community characteristics, perceptions, and economic capacity. The results indicate that converting decommissioned offshore platforms into artificial reefs in the Makassar Strait is a practical and cost-efficient approach. This utilization contributes to maintaining ecosystem balance and enhancing biodiversity naturally. Ecological feasibility is supported by seabed topography and water depth conditions that are conducive to coral larvae and fish life. The aquatic biodiversity identified includes various fish species up to apex predators (Prionace glauca), as well as Cnidarians from the class Anthozoa, such as Acroporidae sp., Hormathiidae sp., Calcigorgia spiculifera, Cereus pedunculatus, Hormathiidae sp., and Junceella sp. Acroporidae sp. represents hard corals (Scleractinia). The management of Indonesian Archipelagic Sea Lane II (ALKI-2) in this area requires regulation of shipping navigation. From a social perspective, the feasibility is supported by optimistic community perceptions, driven by local knowledge regarding the presence of decommissioned offshore platforms and their potential conversion into artificial reefs. The economic value generated from this conversion is estimated at IDR 394,632,513.83 per year, derived from various activities, particularly increased fisheries productivity and sustainable professional diving tourism. The management of decommissioned offshore platforms (ALPs) can reduce operational costs by up to IDR 988 billion. This study recommends implementing a pilot project for unused offshore platforms, supported by further multidisciplinary research encompassing ecological, social, economic, and institutional dimensions, involving multiple stakeholders.
