The transition from higher education to the workforce is a developmental stage characterized by numerous challenges for fresh graduates. During this period, individuals face demands related to employment, financial independence, self-identity, and future planning, which may trigger a quarter-life crisis. This phenomenon indicates that the ability to navigate developmental crises is influenced not only by personal factors but also by social support, family communication patterns, and coping strategies. Therefore, this study aimed to: (1) identify the characteristics of respondents, levels of social support, family communication patterns, coping strategies, and quarter-life crisis among fresh graduates; (2) analyze differences in social support, family communication patterns, coping strategies, and quarter-life crisis based on employment status; (3) examine the relationships among respondent characteristics, social support, family communication patterns, coping strategies, and quarter-life crisis; and (4) analyze the effects of social support, family communication patterns, and coping strategies on quarter-life crisis among fresh graduates.
This study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional research design. Data were collected online from fresh graduates across Indonesia between January and March 2026. The study population consisted of individuals who had graduated within the last one to two years. A total of approximately 400 respondents participated in the study through probability and voluntary sampling techniques. Ethical approval was obtained from the Human Research Ethics Committee of IPB University under approval number 670/IT3.P6/TA.00.03/M/B/2026.
The instruments used in this study included: (1) the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) developed by Zimet et al. (1988) to measure social support; (2) the Revised Family Communication Pattern (RFCP) developed by Ritchie and Fitzpatrick (1990) to assess family communication patterns; (3) a coping strategy instrument adapted from Lazarus and Folkman’s coping theory; and (4) the Quarter-Life Crisis Diagnosis Quiz developed by Hassler (2009) to measure quarter-life crisis. Data were analyzed using SPSS for descriptive statistics, independent sample t-tests, and correlation analyses, while Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) was employed to examine direct and indirect effects among variables.
The findings revealed that most fresh graduates demonstrated moderate levels of social support, family communication patterns, coping strategies, and quarter-life crisis. Social support was primarily obtained from friends and the surrounding environment. Family communication patterns were dominated by conversation orientation, indicating openness in sharing information, thoughts, and emotions within the family. Respondents generally utilized a combination of problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping strategies to manage the challenges associated with emerging adulthood. Quarter-life crisis was commonly reflected in uncertainty about life direction, anxiety regarding the future, and pressure related to making important life decisions.
The results of the independent sample t-test indicated significant differences between employed and unemployed fresh graduates. Employed respondents reported higher levels of peer support and coping strategies, whereas unemployed respondents experienced higher levels of quarter-life crisis and stronger conformity-oriented family communication patterns. Employment appeared to serve as a source of psychological and economic stability, thereby reducing the intensity of quarter-life crisis among fresh graduates.
The correlation analysis showed that, among individual characteristics, employment status and income were associated with the level of quarter-life crisis. In addition, age, year of graduation, and income or allowance were associated with social support, family communication patterns, and coping strategies. Regarding family characteristics, family size was associated with quarter-life crisis, while parents' age, educational level, and income were associated with several study variables. Furthermore, the correlation analysis among the main variables indicated that social support was positively and significantly associated with family communication patterns and coping strategies, while it was negatively and significantly associated with quarter life crisis. Family communication patterns were also positively associated with coping strategies and negatively associated with quarter-life crisis. In addition, coping strategies were negatively and significantly associated with quarter life crisis.
The SEM-PLS analysis demonstrated that social support had a positive and significant effect on both family communication patterns and coping strategies. Higher levels of perceived social support were associated with more open family communication and more adaptive coping strategies. However, social support did not directly affect quarter life crisis. Instead, its influence occurred indirectly through family communication patterns. Family communication patterns emerged as the strongest predictor of quarter life crisis, with a total effect coefficient of ß = -0.605, indicating that more positive family communication significantly reduced quarter-life crisis. Meanwhile, coping strategies did not show a significant direct effect on quarter-life crisis.
These findings highlight the critical role of family communication as a protective factor in helping fresh graduates navigate the challenges of early adulthood. Open, supportive, and constructive communication within the family creates a secure environment that enables young adults to cope more effectively with uncertainty and life transitions. Therefore, interventions aimed at reducing quarter life crisis should focus on strengthening social support systems and improving family communication quality. Recommended programs include career and mental health counseling services, adaptive coping skills training, family communication literacy programs, and mentoring initiatives designed to support fresh graduates during their transition from education to employment and adulthood.
