      Abstract

Adolescent aggression remains one of the most prevalent behavioral problems in Indonesia. Various forms of aggressive behavior, including bullying, physical and verbal violence, and student brawls, continue to occur among adolescents. The family environment is considered an important context influencing aggressive behavior through parenting style and interparental conflict. However, not all adolescents raised in less supportive family environments exhibit aggressive behavior. One psychological factor that may explain these differences is emotion regulation. This study aimed to analyze adolescent characteristics, family characteristics, parenting style, interparental conflict, emotion regulation, and adolescent aggression; examine gender differences; investigate the relationships among variables; and analyze the effects of parenting style, interparental conflict, and emotion regulation on adolescent aggression. This study employed a quantitative cross-sectional design. The research was conducted at one senior high school and one vocational high school in East Jakarta, selected purposively because the area has the highest incidence of student brawls in the Special Capital Region of Jakarta. The participants consisted of 223 eleventh-grade adolescents aged 15–18 years who lived with both parents. Data were collected using Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire (PARQ), Children's Perception of Interparental Conflict (CPIC), Behavioral Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (BERQ), and Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, Pearson correlation, and Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The results showed that most respondents were middle adolescents, with a relatively balanced proportion of male and female participants. Most adolescents perceived high levels of maternal and paternal acceptance, whereas maternal and paternal rejection, interparental conflict, and aggression were generally categorized as low. Active approach was the most frequently used adaptive emotion regulation strategy, whereas ignoring was the most prominent maladaptive emotion regulation strategy. No significant gender differences were found in parenting style, interparental conflict, or adolescent aggression. However, female adolescents reported a higher frequency of both adaptive and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies than male adolescents. The findings also showed that maternal and paternal acceptance and rejection, as well as interparental conflict, were associated with the frequency of emotion regulation strategy use and adolescent aggression. Adolescents who perceived higher levels of parental acceptance were more likely to use adaptive emotion regulation strategies and exhibited lower levels of aggression. Conversely, higher levels of perceived parental rejection and interparental conflict were associated with more frequent use of maladaptive emotion regulation strategies and higher levels of adolescent aggression. The SEM analysis revealed that maternal rejection was the only family-related factor that had a direct positive effect on adolescent aggression. In addition, interparental conflict influenced adolescent aggression indirectly through emotion regulation strategies, particularly maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. These findings suggest that the frequency of emotion regulation strategy use serves as a psychological mechanism linking interparental conflict to adolescent aggression. Overall, the findings highlight the important role of family experiences, particularly maternal rejection and interparental conflict, in adolescent aggression. The results provide empirical evidence that strengthening positive parenting practices, reducing destructive interparental conflict, and promoting more adaptive emotion regulation strategies may contribute to the prevention of aggressive behavior among adolescents.
