      Abstract

Productive squid fishing grounds can be predicted by examining the relationship between squid abundance and marine environmental conditions, particularly chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and sea surface temperature (SST). Because environmental characteristics vary spatially, this study investigated the waters off south of the Bangka Islands. The objectives were (1) to describe the temporal patterns of Chl-a and SST and (2) to identify their characteristics during the reported squid fishing season. Monthly satellite-derived Chl-a and SST data from January 2021 to December 2025 were analyzed to calculate the mean, standard deviation, and the other eleven statistics of the Chlo-a and SST data. These statistics were normalized using five-year monthly means and standard deviations to generate monthly indices. High-condition months were defined when the index of = 0 occurred at least four times over the five-year period. The relationship between Chl-a and SST was explored using statistical and index plots. High SST was observed during May–June, whereas high Chl-a occurred during July– August. During peak seasons of squids, i.e., April-May and October-November, SST range was 29.3-29.5 oC and 28.6-28.9 oC respectively while the Chl-a range was 0.42 – 0.45mg/m3 dan 0.45-0.47 mg/m3. These findings provide a scientific basis for identifying productive squid fishing grounds in the study area.
