The increasing use of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) in the shipbuilding industry has led to a significant increase in FRP waste, which is difficult to decompose naturally. One potential approach to utilizing this waste is to recycle it into composite boards by incorporating coconut coir fiber as a reinforcing material due to its abundant availability, environmental friendliness, and reinforcing potential. This study aimed to describe the surface morphology of the composite board, analyze its physical and mechanical properties, and compare the test results with those reported by Rahmawati (2025), the JIS A 5905:2003 standard, and the BKI (2022) standard.
The study employed an experimental method using different compositions of resin FRP waste, and coconut fiber namely P0, P1.1, P1.2, P2.1, P2.2, P3.1, dan P3.2. The physical properties evaluated included density, moisture content, waste absorption, and thickness swelling, while the mechanical properties were assessed through the Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) and Modulus of Rupture (MOR). In addition, morphological observations were conducted to examine the structure and interfacial bonding among the constituent materials of the composite boards.
The results showed that variations in material composition significantly influenced the characteristics of the composite boards. Morphological observations indicated that increasing the resin content produced a denser board structure with fewer voids. Regarding the physical properties, P0 exhibited the highest density, reaching 1.23 g/cm3. In contrast, P2.2 showed the highest moisture content, water absorption, and thickness swelling, with values of 4.10%, 40.30%, and 11.06% respectively. Regarding the mechanical properties, the highest MOE was achieved by P0 (3,193.93 N/mm2), while the highest MOR was obtained by P3.2 (29.40 N/mm2). Increasing the resin content to 60% and the FRP waste content to 24% resulted in a denser composite board with fewer voids. Comparison with Rahmawati (2025) showed that the P0 board exhibited better physical properties and higher MOE, but a lower MOR. Most of the physical properties of the composite boards complied with the requirements JIS A 5905:2003, except for the density of formulation P2.2, which was below the minimum standard requirement. Meanwhile, all MOE and MOR values did not meet the requirements of BKI (2022). Therefore, the developed composite boards are not yet suitable for use as structural components in ships but show considerable potential for non-structural applications, such as wall panels, ceiling panels, partition walls, and deckhouse interior components.
