Kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) is a leafy vegetable widely cultivated using the nutrient film technique (NFT) hydroponic system due to its efficient use of water and nutrients. One of the factors affecting the success of cultivation in the NFT system is the growing medium, which functions to support the plant while influencing water availability and root-zone aeration. Study aimed to analyze the growth and yield responses of kale to different growing media in a Smart Farming Container and to determine the most effective growing medium. The experiment employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments, namely rockwool, hydroton, and sphagnum moss, each replicated three times. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey’s test at the 5% significance level. The results showed that the type of growing medium significantly affected the growth and yield of kale cultivated under the NFT hydroponic system. Sphagnum moss produced the best performance in most growth and yield parameters, while rockwool resulted in the highest stem diameter and root length, and hydroton showed the lowest growth and yield performance. Based on the findings, sphagnum moss is recommended as the most effective growing medium for kale cultivation in the NFT hydroponic system within a Smart farming container.
