      Abstract

Higher education represents a strategic investment in human resource development, contributing to national productivity, well-being, and competitiveness. Despite its importance, access to higher education in Indonesia remains unequal, particularly among farming families experiencing socioeconomic constraints. This study analyzes the relationships among parental expectations, children's investment behavior, financial behavior, and interest in pursuing higher education. An explanatory research design was employed, utilizing quantitative data collected through self-administered questionnaires. The sample comprised 120 11th-grade students in Sragen Regency, Central Java, selected via purposive sampling. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation test, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using Microsoft Excel, SPSS 25.0, and SmartPLS 3. The findings reveal that the educational attainment of fathers and mothers correlates with children's investment behavior and interest in higher education. Parental expectations are significantly and positively associated with parental child investment, financial behavior, and interest in higher education among both male and female students. However, the patterns of contribution differ between groups. Parental child investment mediates the influence of parental expectations on financial behavior and interest in higher education. However, financial behavior does not significantly influence interest in higher education in either group. These results highlight the importance of fostering positive parental expectations and tangible investments in children's education. It is recommended that schools and government agencies strengthen partnerships with families through financial literacy education, educational planning, and improved access to scholarship information to support the continuation of higher education among children from farming families.
