Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) instruments are widely used in oceanographic surveys to obtain vertical profiles of water column properties. However, commercial CTD systems are relatively expensive and rely on winch-based deployment. This study developed a ballast-based Profiler YoYo prototype as a low-cost, automatic profiling alternative. The ballast system was based on the Variable Buoyancy System (VBS) concept, using a piston driven by a linear actuator to change ballast volume and buoyancy. The prototype integrates an ESP32 microcontroller, an MS5837-30BA pressure sensor, and a 6000 mAh 6S LiPo battery, tested in a 2 m-deep pool. The prototype reached maximum depths of 1.78 m and 1.72 m, with cycle times of 27.8 s and 24.6 s. Average current was 0.679 A, giving an estimated battery life of 8.84 h. The prototype demonstrated automatic vertical profiling and provides a foundation for future development of a low-cost CTD instrument through conductivity sensor integration.
