      Abstract

Coral reef ecosystems are among the most biologically diverse and productive marine ecosystems in tropical waters. Reef fishes play an important role in maintaining ecological balance through various behaviours related to habitat utilisation, interspecific interactions, and associations with coral colony structures. However, information regarding the variation in reef fish behaviour and its relationship with coral colony types in the Seribu Islands remains limited. This study aimed to identify the composition of reef fish species, the types of coral colonies utilised, and the variation in fish behaviour across four islands in the Seribu Island, namely Panjang Island, Pelangi Island, Belanda Island, and Kelapa Island. Observations were conducted using underwater video recordings, which were analysed visually. Fish species identification, behavioural classification, and coral colony documentation were supported by scientific literature and taxonomic references. Reef fish behaviours were classified based on visually observable activities, including free swimming, substrate pecking, hovering, Schooling, Sheltering, and territorial behaviour. The results identified a total of 29 families, 82 genera, and 215 reef fish species across all study sites. Kelapa Island exhibited the highest species richness, with 120 species recorded, followed by Belanda Island with 119 species and Panjang Island with 107 species, whereas Pelangi Island showed the lowest species richness, with 83 species. Reef fishes displayed a wide range of behavioral patterns within coral colonies. Among the observed behaviors, roaming, feeding, and hovering were the most frequently recorded activities. In contrast, resting and cleaning behaviors were observed only rarely. Interactions between reef fishes and coral colonies indicated that several coral genera, such as Acropora and Porites, were present at all study sites and served as important habitats for various fish species. Meanwhile, certain coral genera, including Echinophyllia and Platygyra, were restricted to specific islands, reflecting differences in habitat characteristics among locations. Variations in coral morphology and structural complexity among islands influenced differences in habitat utilisation patterns and reef fish behaviour. Overall, the findings demonstrate that coral colony structure and diversity play a crucial role in shaping reef fish behavioural variation within coral reef ecosystems.
