      Abstract

Bamboo craft MSMEs operate in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) business ecosystem, increasing their exposure to various types of risks. A VUCA business environment creates increasingly unpredictable conditions, requiring MSMEs to develop their resilience capabilities. Empirical research on MSME resilience often views resilience as a single or partial capability, thus failing to fully explain how resilience mechanisms operate at various system levels in a comprehensive manner. This study aims to analyze the resilience of bamboo craft MSMEs at multiple levels, encompassing entrepreneurial resilience (agent level), organizational resilience (System of Subsystems level), and business ecosystem resilience (System of Systems level). The primary focus of the study is to compare MSME resilience models in two study areas located within different business ecosystems. This study also aims to analyze the network structure of MSMEs to understand their position within the business ecosystem, identify potential risks they face and how to mitigate them, and analyze the performance of MSMEs in both study areas in relation to these conditions. The research method used was an exploratory comparative approach with a mixed methods approach. Data were collected through interviews and questionnaires with bamboo craft MSMEs. Network structure analysis was conducted to determine the position of MSMEs using measures of degree centrality, betweenness centrality, closeness centrality, density, centralization, variety, and isolation. Intuitionistic fuzzy set-based House of risk (IFS-based HOR) analysis was used to identify potential MSME risks to better address uncertainty and mitigate them, and multilevel resilience analysis was conducted at the entrepreneur, organizational, and business ecosystem levels. Entrepreneurial and organizational resilience were analyzed using the average dimension score. Meanwhile, business ecosystem resilience used embeddedness and interdependence, representing the level of attachment and dependence between actors based on the size of the business ecosystem network structure. Four resilience-related performance indicators were analyzed using KPIs: income for financial performance, business duration for business sustainability performance, number of product types and product quality for innovation performance, and domestic/foreign market reach for market reach performance. The results of the study indicate that area 1 has a broad but loose and more fragmented structure, with dominant relationships in the marketing sector. Area 2 has a slightly tighter and more coordinated business ecosystem structure, with dominant relationships in business consulting. These different network structures determine the direction of information flow, coordination, and adaptive capacity to disruption. In the risk analysis, area 1 perceives higher external risks while area 2 perceives higher internal and technical risks. Risk mitigation in area 1 is social and collective in nature, namely coordination/collaboration with other parties, artisan associations for price stability, and others, preparing/increasing stock, conducting online sales, and not stocking too much material. Risk mitigation in area 2 is technical and knowledge-based, namely preparing/increasing stock, switching to manual tools in case of power outages, clear material analysis, not relying solely on one supplier, and clear product specifications. In the resilience analysis, the results of the study indicate that MSME resilience is not homogeneous. MSMEs in Area 1, which operate within a looser and more fragmented business ecosystem network structure, demonstrate stronger resilience at the entrepreneur and organizational level, supported by social connections, optimism, adaptive capacity, and planning. In contrast, MSMEs in Area 2 operate within a more coordinated and connected business ecosystem, where resilience is mediated more by systemic support, technology utilization, and organizational stability. New findings in this study indicate that strengthening resilience at one level can compensate for weaknesses in resilience at other levels, thus understanding MSME resilience as a dynamic, multilevel phenomenon. In Area 2, the support of their ecosystem results in higher performance across all aspects (financial performance, business continuity, innovation, and market reach). These interpretations of findings indicate that MSME performance is associated with resilience within their business ecosystem network. The implications of this research emphasize that MSME development strategies and policies cannot be standardized but need to be tailored to the resilience profile and structure of the local business ecosystem. Strengthening the resilience of entrepreneurs, organizations, and business ecosystem networks needs to be designed in an integrated manner so that MSMEs become more adaptive and sustainable in facing VUCA risks.
