Salmonella spp. infection is one of the major causes of zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans, including through reptiles such as snakes that serve as natural reservoirs. The presence of wild snakes in the campus environment may increase the risk of human exposure. This study aimed to isolate and identify Salmonella spp. from wild snakes in the campus area of IPB University. Cloacal swab samples from 16 individual snakes collected from several locations were cultured on Salmonella Shigella Agar (SSA) medium. The isolates were subsequently subjected to biochemical tests including TSIA, urease, and mannitol tests, and confirmed through identification of the invA gene using the PCR method. Based on microbiological and molecular analyses, 15 out of 16 samples (93.75%) tested positive for Salmonella spp. Therefore, this study concluded that the majority of wild snake samples collected from around the IPB University campus tested positive for Salmonella spp., and snakes can serve as reservoirs of Salmonella spp. regardless of species. These findings indicate that wild snakes around the IPB University campus may act as a source of Salmonella spp. transmission and represent a potential zoonotic risk to humans and other animals.
