      Abstract

The distribution of sightings of the pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) can provide an initial insight into habitat use and the environmental conditions that support the survival of this species within a landscape. The distribution of these sightings is strongly influenced by food availability and environmental factors (temperature, humidity and light intensity). This study aims to analyse the distribution of sightings of the pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) and its habitat characteristics based on observed group structure, potential food plants, fruit availability and environmental factors in primary forest, secondary forest and settlements within the Batang Toru forest area, Martabe, PT. Agincourt Resources. Data collection was carried out using purposive sampling and the quadrat method. Almost all pig-tailed macaque encounters during the observation period occurred at the Aek Pahu site which comprises secondary forest and settlement areas compared to TMF East which is dominated by primary forest. At Aek Pahu, three macaque groups were found, totalling 121 individuals, whereas in TMF East only one adult male living solitarily was found. Group Aek Pahu III had the highest number of individuals, namely 73. The age structure adults (43,44%), juveniles (36,07%), and infants (20,49%) indicates potential for population growth. The relationship between sightings and environmental factors indicates that environmental conditions can influence or correlate with the likelihood of detecting beruk. These results highlight the importance of long-term planning regarding the availability of natural food sources and the management of pig-tailed macaque habitats.
