      Abstract

The tuna handline fleet at PPN Palabuhanratu operates continuously throughout the year. Efficient trip planning that follows optimal fishing months is necessary to minimize potential losses caused by high operational costs and fluctuations in catch production. This study aims to identify catch composition, determine fishing season patterns, and analyze the oceanographic conditions of tuna handline fishing grounds. Data were collected through observation, interviews, logbook data from 2021–2025, and satellite imagery, and were analyzed using descriptive methods, fishing season index, simple moving average, and spatial analysis of oceanographic parameters (chlorophyll-a, sea surface temperature, and salinity). The results show that the catch composition is dominated by four main species, namely yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus), albacore (Thunnus alalunga), and skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), contributing 80.7% of the total catch. Meanwhile, there are 22 bycatch species contributing 19.3%. The optimal and consistently productive fishing season occurs in February, March, April, August, September, October, and November. Oceanographic conditions during optimal months are characterized by chlorophyll-a concentrations of 0.3–0.5 mg/m³, sea surface temperature of 27– 29°C, and salinity of 34–34.5 PSU. Spatial analysis indicates that fishing locations are generally situated in areas suitable for tuna habitat characteristics.
