dc.description.abstractAyam broiler memiliki laju pertumbuhan yang tinggi sehingga memerlukan lingkungan pemeliharaan yang optimal untuk mendukung performa produksi, kesehatan, dan kesejahteraannya. Pada sistem closed house, litter sekam padi merupakan alas kandang yang umum digunakan, namun ketersediaannya semakin terbatas akibat meningkatnya kebutuhan industri peternakan dan sektor lain yang memanfaatkan sekam padi sebagai bahan baku biomassa. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan alternatif alas kandang yang mampu mempertahankan bahkan meningkatkan performa produksi ayam broiler. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji kualitas udara kandang, status fisiologis dan imunitas, indikator animal welfare, serta produktivitas ayam broiler yang dipelihara pada closed house dengan alas slat plastik dan alas sekam padi. Penelitian dilakukan pada dua unit closed house komersial berkapasitas masing-masing 25.000 ekor ayam broiler yang dipelihara selama 28 hari. Kandang perlakuan menggunakan alas slat plastik dengan ukuran celah 1 × 1 cm dan ketinggian 20 cm dari lantai, sedangkan kandang kontrol menggunakan litter sekam padi setebal 10 cm. Pengamatan dilakukan terhadap kualitas udara kandang, meliputi suhu, kelembapan, amonia, oksigen, karbon dioksida, dan debu total; status fisiologis dan imunitas ayam; indikator kesejahteraan hewan berupa footpad lesions, hock burn, arthritis, dan gait score; serta parameter produktivitas dan analisis ekonomi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan slat plastik tidak memengaruhi kondisi mikroklimat kandang, kadar amonia, oksigen, dan karbon dioksida dibandingkan litter sekam padi. Namun, kandang dengan alas slat plastik memiliki konsentrasi debu total yang lebih rendah. Status fisiologis dan imunitas ayam tidak berbeda nyata antarperlakuan. Tingkat kejadian footpad lesions dan hock burn lebih rendah pada ayam yang dipelihara di atas slat plastik, meskipun kejadian arthritis lebih tinggi tanpa memengaruhi gait score. Selain itu, ayam yang dipelihara pada alas slat plastik memiliki pertambahan bobot badan dan bobot panen yang lebih tinggi sehingga menghasilkan keuntungan ekonomi yang lebih baik. Dengan demikian, slat plastik berpotensi menjadi alternatif alas kandang yang efektif dan berkelanjutan untuk sistem pemeliharaan ayam broiler closed house.
dc.description.sponsorshipBroiler chickens exhibit a high growth rate, necessitating an optimal rearing environment to support their production performance, health, and welfare. In closed house systems, rice hull litter is commonly used as bedding; however, its availability is becoming increasingly limited owing to the growing demand from the livestock industry and other sectors utilizing rice hulls as a biomass raw material. Therefore, alternative bedding materials are needed to maintain or enhance the production performance of broiler chickens. This study aimed to assess the air quality, physiological and immune status, animal welfare indicators, and productivity of broiler chickens reared in closed houses with plastic slat flooring and rice hull litter. The study was conducted in two commercial closed house units, each with a capacity of 25,000 broiler chickens reared for 28 days. The treatment barn used plastic slat flooring with a 1 × 1 cm gap size and a height of 20 cm above the floor, whereas the control barn used a 10 cm thick rice hull litter. Observations were carried out on barn air quality, including temperature, humidity, ammonia, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and total dust; physiological and immune status of the chickens; animal welfare indicators such as footpad lesions, hock burn, arthritis, and gait score; and productivity parameters and economic analysis. The results showed that the use of plastic slat flooring did not affect barn microclimate conditions or levels of ammonia, oxygen, and carbon dioxide compared to rice hull litter. However, barns with plastic slat flooring had lower total dust concentrations. There were no significant differences in the physiological and immune statuses between the treatments. The incidence of footpad lesions and hock burns was lower in chickens reared on plastic slat flooring, although the incidence of arthritis was higher without affecting the gait score. In addition, chickens reared on plastic slat flooring had higher weight gain and final body weight, resulting in better economic returns. Therefore, plastic slat flooring has the potential to be an effective and sustainable alternative bedding material for closed-house broiler chicken rearing systems.
