| dc.description.abstract | The high biological resource potential of the Banda Sea as a spawning ground of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) in FMA 714 heightens the risk of illegal nighttime fishing within the open-close area. This study aimed to map
the distribution of light fishing vessels, identify potential violations in the open close area, and recommend surveillance follow-up actions. This study utilized VIIRS Boat Detection data from the Earth Observation Group throughout 2025.
Spatial analysis and descriptive analysis were applied to the data. The results revealed fishing vessel activity across the entire WPPNRI 714 Banda Sea waters throughout 2025. Fishing vessel activity was predominantly concentrated in the
central and southern Banda Sea, which constitutes the primary habitat of
yellowfin tuna. Vessel detections indicating potential violations of the open-close area were identified during the closure period, with the highest number of violations recorded in November, reaching 69, 85, and 58 detections in October, November, and December respectively. Recommended follow-up actions for fishing vessel surveillance in the Banda Sea open-close area include socialization on zoning regulations, formal warnings for large vessels detected within the openclose area, increased patrol intensity, and the utilization of VIIRS Boat Detection satellite imagery as an early detection system for potential violations. | |
