      Abstract

The use of turtles on Enggano Island has been a longstanding practice, integral to the community's knowledge and cultural traditions. This purpose of this study is to examine the various forms of turtle utilisation on Enggano Island through social, cultural, and economic perspectives, and elucidate the local population's understanding and interpretation of turtles. A phenomenological approach was utilised to investigate the community's experiences and perceptions using qualitative methods such as in-depth and semi-structured interviews, photo elicitation, and participatory observation. The use of turtles in Enggano functions as a food source in traditional rituals, provides materials for handicrafts, and serves as a symbol of peace. The primary species used were green turtle (Chelonia mydas), olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), and hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Conservation initiatives implemented by the Bengkulu Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), such as restricting number of turtles utilised in rituals, have proven ineffective due to inadequate community engagement. This study suggests that turtle conservation on Enggano Island should involve indigenous and local communities and conservation agencies in culturally informed and collaborative ways.
